Enthiran-the ROBOT

Endhiran

Shankar has a winner.I can undoubtedly state that this film is the best Indian film when it comes to technical mastery.Seems like Sun Picture’s supremo Kalanidhi Maran’s decision to take over Shankar’s dream project turned out to be a highly profitable one as  the film is running packed houses all over the world.

Plot

“I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I’m a… fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you’d like to hear it I can sing it for you.”This is one of the most unforgettable quotes ever uttered in Movie History. This is spoken by a “dying” super Computer named HAL 9000 Kubrick’s pathbreaking Sci Fi film 2001:A Space Odyssey. [Havent heard of the film?too bad!,Google it]

Review

Seems like a coincidence, but our Indian version of humanoid super robot named “Chitti” also seem to be pleading for his ‘life’ in a scene in the film.As I said chitti is a humanoid robot crafted by a “super intelligent” scientist named Vaseegaran[Rajnikanth].Chitti has the strength of a hundred men, knows all languages[even language of mosquitoes!?]and dance forms, and can even prepare a multi course dinner in seconds.Oh yes,our hero created his masterpiece for a noble cause. He wants to induct Chitti into the Indian Army to save precious Human lives. But his dream was squashed by his mentor Professor Bohra when he dismissed the Chitti as a “stupid machine”.So now Vaseegaran has to induce human emotion and conscience to get approval from a committee headed by Bohra to realize his dream.Problems starts for Vaseegaran when he upgrades his invention to have human feelings and emotion. Chitti develops love for Sana[Aishwarya Rai], Vaseegaran’s girl friend. Thus Chitti turns against Vaseegaran much like the Frankenstein!.

Movie as whole is extremely entertaining with its above average computer generated stuffs and Rajnikanth’s charm.Script seemed solid enough to  support the weight caused by the special effects.Shankar could’ve cut down some lengthy action scenes especially the one in the train. It seems odd enough as the villains in the film also seem to have super powers. In the fight scene in a Train compartment b/w some ruffians and Chitti, villains keep coming back for more even though they are being hammered by a man of metal. Its funny though, even the Robot made by Villain[Professor Bohra]looks like a villain!.The movie has some good laughs in the first half with chitti exhibiting his super powers. The second half was a bit lagging with some extended action scenes which can some times bore you.The climatic scenes are surely the first when it comes to the Indian cinema industry.Shankar surely has put a lot of his energy in crafting the ideas to decorate the film’s final acts.To be frank there were no particular scene where I had goosebumps[Against Avatar scenario],but there is indeed some scene which make your jaws drop.Even though Rahman’s tunes were a bit of a let down, Shankar’s visualisation covered the lackluster perfomance of the songs.Curious enough, both Rajni and Aishwarya always find some ill fitting excuses to go for an outing to sing and dance,be it machu pichu or sun-laden desert.

Kilimanjaro song Shot in Machu Pichu

The Idea of the film is not original as I said earlier.2001,Blade Runner,AI,Frankenstein are to name a few movies from which Shankar seems to be inspired from. But the way he executed the theme in the very Indian way should be appreciated. And its a fresh getaway from the usual Rajni films which is full of his mannerism and punch dialogues.Aishwarya looks stunning but her character seemed like it needed a lot more polishing as her damsel in distress act was not that appealing.Sadly the Rajni-Ash chemistry seems to work only in the well shot Kilimanjaro song.

Verdict

On the whole Its paisa vasool for the audience as the movie has a crowd pleasing screenplay, great special effects and ofcourse Rajnikanth’s charisma!Dont even bother waiting to watch it in the small screen.Endhiran is the grand daddy of all masala entertainers!Miss it only if you hate Rajnikanth!

Raavanan

21 06 2010

Visual Extravaganza! This was the first phrase that popped up in my mind when I thought of writing a review for this film.As almost everyone is aware,Raavan and Raavanan are identical twins when it comes to the story line. The only material differences were that of the language and star cast. Thus I had the choice of watching Vikram’s Raavanan Or Junior Bachan’s Raavan[Please notice the difference in spelling].I opted for the Tamil Version as my marks in Hindi as third language during school days were pathetically low.

The story of Raavanan revolves around Robin hood like character, Veeraiya played by Vikram who is a dangerous outlaw and the undisputed king among tribals, makes his own laws and has his own army. He ruthlessly kills many cops who has come in his way, only to be followed by SP Dev played by PrithviRaj. His beautiful wife, Ragini, played by Aishwarya Rai is abducted by Veera to avenge the cop.Karthik  plays the character of a forest guard who helps Dev find his wife.

Raavanan is essentially based on the epic Raamayana. We can see almost all mythical characters of the epic including Rama,Sita,Raavana,Shoorpanaka,Kumbhakarna etc.But Unlike the original epic Mani’s Nuovo Raamayana has some different shades for each character. For example we got a Raavana who has got a real purpose,Rama with a little darker shade but the only character which is not different from epic is that of Sita.Aishwarya Rai portrays a near convincing sita which stands true to the original character,Strong but empathetic.

Mani Ratnam, using the tribal characters in the movie presents Veeraiya as a mythical figure. There is a scene in the movie where Tribals try to describe to Dev Veeraiya really is.In their words we could experience  a mythical element surrounding Veeraiya’s character and that seemed like a rip off from Marlon Brando’s character in  Apoclaypse Now.Veera in the movie is a quintessential character and Vikram has portrayed that role effortlessly and effectively.Aishwarya Rai’s screen presence, full of majestic beauty and grace is amazing. She expresses her anger and agony while caught as a pawn in the game of chess played between the two lead male characters.Prithviraj as Dev looks convincing as the tough cop searching for his abducted wife. All the supporting cast including Prabhu and Karthick has done justice to their roles especially karthik who has tried to add a comic touch to his character which resembles Hanuman.Character of Ranjitha seemed to be waste as she has nothing much to do in terms of plot as she doesn’t even have one proper dialogue to deliver.I suspect Mani has cut all her dialogues in fear of public anger as she is part of the infamous Swamy sex scandal.

Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now

The screenplay is quite flimsy in the first half as the only thing which happens is Ragini screaming and Veera roaring without conveying any proper story piece  to audience. But the screenplay takes off during the second half amid more fighting and dramatic visuals. The supposed empathy turned love feeling of Ragini towards Veera is not that effective since Suhasini Maniratnam’s dialogue doesn’t seem to go after the emotion of love. But the visuals of Mani Ratnam gives the audience a hint about their emotions. Screenplay still has some plot holes and some unbaked parts. The struggle of the tribals and their life under tyranny of the brutal and corrupt police force has not been narrated properly. This a key plotline Mani failed to develop which acted as a counterweight to his absolutely stunning direction and technical wizardry.

Technical Wizardry, that is the perfect word to describe the efforts of Mani and his crew.Especially Manikandan and Santosh Sivan for their superior cinematographical skills. The camera captures the very essence of forest beauty.Audience feels like they are inside the same forest the story takes place. The editing by Sreekar is as the scenes move by without any significant glitches.Rahman has once again spellbound the audience through his background score which stands out through out the film. All songs in the film are very well placed and picturised. The climatic battle scene between Dev and Veera in a hanging bridge was one of the WTF moments in the movie.Movie’s climax was one of the most memorable one for me in terms of Indian Movies.

The Movie Raavanan is an epic sized movie in terms of style but in terms of screenplay it disappoints the audience. This movie could have been an epic much like the original Raamayana if Mani Ratnam worked a bit more efficiently on the scripts and dialogue. The stars are well cast as they delivers the emotions with near perfection. But the technical side deserves the much-needed praise. It Indeed is Visual Extravaganza.Dont miss it,it needs to be watched on Theatre.
